Computing guide > Athens
Athens is an online database of academic journals, which can be searched for information related to your subject.
Using electronic services with Athens authentication.
All of the electronic services that we subscribe to can be accessed from any PC or Mac in University. In order to use a number of them in University and all services available outside University - at home for instance - you will need an Athens account - see the full listing of services (on the BSU website) for details. Below you will find the instructions needed to create your Athens personal account.
Note: The Usernames and Passwords issued by the Library (at the Issue Counter) can only be used on a networked PC at either University site to set up an Athens personal account which you can then use either in University or from home.
Students who are studying at partner colleges in the Wessex Partnership are able to access electronic services via Athens without the need to create a personal Athens account; please ask your tutor for a user name and password.
To create an Athens personal account if you are studying on campus:
- On any BSU computer, open the Internet Explorer web browser
- Go to the Athens web site at http://www.athens.ac.uk/
- Click on Self-registration on the left-hand side.
- A dialog box will appear asking for a username and password.
- Type in the username and password given to you at the Issue Counter and click on Login.
- Enter your details in the form that appears. Part 1 of the form is compulsory.
- Username: You must create a username that is least 6 characters long (Your personal username will begin with the characters displayed to the left-hand side of the box but do not repeat them in the box. Make a note of your full username as you create it).
- Password: This must be at least 6 characters long and contain at least one letter and one character which is not a letter (Passwords are case sensitive. Choose a password you are going to be able to remember and make an immediate note of it! The password must be entered twice, as shown on the form).
- Part 2 of the form contains additional information which is optional but which will be useful to the Library in administering your account.
- Fill in your name and e-mail details and click on Submit Details. The system will respond with a confirmation that the account has been created.
- Leave the Athens web-site. You will not need to go to it again unless you wish to change your personal details, in which case you should click on MyAthens, enter your username and password when prompted and then choose the relevant option.
You can now access those electronic services that use Athens authentication from any networked PC with the personal account you have set up.
Note: Don't forget your personal account Username and Password - only you know them!
